Ratings, Reviews, and the Subscription Revenue Model

The Ratings Strategy

Ratings are the most visible social proof in the App Store and have a documented effect on conversion rate. An app with 4.7 stars and 500 reviews converts dramatically better than one with 4.2 stars and 20 reviews. The algorithm also uses ratings as a quality signal โ€” higher-rated apps rank higher in search. Apple provides the SKStoreReviewRequest API for in-app review prompts. Rules: you can only prompt a maximum of 3 times per year, and Apple controls the timing (it won't always show when you call it). The right moment to prompt: after a user completes a meaningful positive action. For BathCheck: immediately after a user exports their first completed assessment report. For ShowerBuddy: after a user has completed 5 check-ins successfully. Prompt in the moment of delight, not randomly. Negative reviews are an opportunity, not just a problem. Responding to every negative review in App Store Connect (you can respond publicly) with a specific, helpful response signals to potential users that you're responsive and invested. 'I'm sorry you experienced this โ€” we fixed this bug in v2.1 which is now live. Please update and let me know if it's resolved.' A responded-to negative review often converts a wavering potential user better than an unresponded positive one.

Subscription Pricing and StoreKit Configuration

Subscription pricing for iOS apps involves Apple's StoreKit 2 framework and App Store Connect subscription group configuration. Understanding the mechanics prevents costly mistakes. Subscription groups: all subscriptions must belong to a group. Within a group, upgrading or downgrading is handled automatically by Apple. Across groups, subscriptions are independent. Structure your groups to match your upgrade path โ€” ShowerBuddy Individual, ShowerBuddy Family, ShowerBuddy Pro (institutional) could be three separate products or one group with three tiers. Introductory offers: Apple allows free trials, pay-as-you-go introductory pricing, and pay-up-front introductory pricing. A 14-day free trial is typically the highest-converting option for productivity/utility apps in the accessibility space โ€” users need to experience the full value before committing. Note that free trials require payment method on file โ€” this creates a small barrier but the conversion quality (people who provide payment info are more serious) is higher. Family Sharing: you can enable Family Sharing for subscriptions, which allows one subscriber to share access with up to 5 family members. For a family-oriented app like ShowerBuddy, enabling Family Sharing is a significant value-add and a key conversion argument. 'One subscription, the whole family is covered.'

โšก Today's Action

Check your current review prompt timing. Is it triggering at the moment of maximum user satisfaction? If you're not using SKStoreReviewRequest at all, add it this sprint โ€” target the single best moment in your user journey (after the aha moment). Measure your review rate change over the next 30 days.

๐Ÿ’ก Pro Tip

Configure price tiers in App Store Connect carefully โ€” Apple uses territory-specific pricing tiers, not exact amounts. A $9.99 AUD tier might map to $9.49 in some territories. Review your international pricing tier table and adjust where it looks odd.
