Feng Shui Fundamentals & Chi Flow
Chi โ The Practical Explanation
Chi (or qi) is the central concept in feng shui โ translated as 'life force' or 'energy.' In practice, think of it as the invisible flow of air, light, attention, and movement through your space.
GOOD CHI: Moves gently and circularly. Like a slow, winding river โ it nourishes everything it touches. Associated with comfortable, welcoming spaces where people linger naturally.
STAGNANT CHI: Collects in corners, under beds, behind closed doors, and in cluttered areas. Think of a stagnant pond vs a flowing stream. Associated with fatigue, brain fog, and spaces people avoid.
SHAR CHI (Poison Arrows): Chi that moves too fast in a straight line. Long corridors aimed at beds or desks, staircases facing front doors, ceiling beams above sleeping positions. The equivalent of a wind tunnel โ uncomfortable to be in.
AI APPLICATION: Photograph your longest hallway and ask ChatGPT: 'In feng shui, this hallway appears to run directly from [A] to [B]. Is this a poison arrow configuration? What can I place at the end to slow and disperse the chi?'
Mapping Your Home's Flow
Walk through your home as if you're water flowing in from the front door. Where does your attention naturally go? Where do you get 'caught'? Where does it rush past?
COMMON FLOW BLOCKERS:
โข Furniture that forces you to walk around it
โข Doors that can only open halfway due to furniture behind them
โข Piles of stuff on stairs (impedes upward energy movement)
โข Back door visible from front door in a straight line (chi exits too fast)
THE BAGUA OVERLAY:
With yesterday's floor plan sketch in hand:
1. Stand at your front door facing in
2. The bottom row of the bagua = the wall your front door is on
3. Divide your space into a 3ร3 grid
4. Map which rooms fall in which sectors
FOR MATT SPECIFICALLY: The 'Wealth & Prosperity' sector (far left corner from front door) and 'Career' sector (centre of the front wall) are typically the first to optimise for founders.
AI PROMPT FOR TODAY:
'Here is a sketch of my floor plan. My front door is on [X wall]. Help me overlay the bagua map and identify which life areas fall in which rooms. Which areas appear most activated or most depleted based on their function and contents?'
โก Today's Action
Complete the bagua overlay on your floor plan (sketch + AI assistance). Identify the Wealth, Career, and Relationships sectors in your home. Note what's currently in each of those areas โ anything that feels misaligned with those life areas? Take photos of those three sectors and feed them to ChatGPT for analysis.
๐ก Pro Tip
The simplest chi improvement available: open windows in every room for 20 minutes today. Fresh air circulation physically changes the energy of a space. Do this before any furniture moves.
