Content Marketing Strategy
Why Content Works for AI Consultants
Content marketing is the highest-leverage channel for AI consultants, and here's why: your buyers are not impulse purchasers. A company contemplating a $50Kโ$200K AI engagement will do extensive research before ever speaking to a vendor. They'll Google questions, read LinkedIn posts, watch demos, and consume case studies. If your content shows up during that research phase, you enter the conversation already trusted โ before any sales interaction has occurred.
The goal of content is to position yourself as the obvious expert on a specific set of problems your ICP cares about. Not marketing content. Not corporate thought leadership. Real, useful, specific content that solves real problems your clients face โ or helps them make better decisions.
For an AI consulting business, effective content topics might include: 'How to evaluate an AI vendor's proposals (what to ask, what to watch out for)', 'Why most AI pilots fail to reach production', 'The real cost of building vs buying AI infrastructure', 'How we reduced a client's customer churn by 23% using behavioral clustering.' Notice these are all valuable to your ICP regardless of whether they hire you. That's the point. Genuinely useful content earns trust faster than any sales pitch.
The key strategic insight: you don't need to publish everywhere. You need to publish consistently in one place, on one topic cluster, for long enough to build a body of work. Six months of consistent publishing beats five years of sporadic activity.
Choosing Your Content Formats and Cadence
Different content formats serve different functions in your marketing system. Understanding which format to use โ and when โ is what separates scattered content from a cohesive strategy.
Long-form articles (1,500โ3,000 words) are your authority builders. They rank on Google, get shared on LinkedIn, and serve as the foundation from which shorter content is repurposed. Aim for one per week or fortnight.
LinkedIn posts (short-form, 150โ500 words) are your distribution engine. They reach your existing network and, if they perform well, expand beyond it. Aim for 3โ5 per week, written in your authentic voice, not polished corporate-speak.
Email newsletters are your retention mechanism. People who subscribe have self-selected as interested in your thinking. They're warm. A weekly or biweekly email keeps you top of mind. Even a list of 300 people is valuable if they're all your ICP.
Case studies are your conversion assets. A well-written case study โ problem, solution, measurable result โ is one of the most powerful pieces of sales collateral you can have. One good case study does more work than 50 generic LinkedIn posts.
For a solo founder, the sustainable starting point is: one long-form article per fortnight, three LinkedIn posts per week, one email newsletter per fortnight. This is achievable without burning out, and consistent execution compounds dramatically over 12โ18 months.
โก Today's Action
Identify your top 10 content topics by listing the 10 questions your ideal clients most need answered. Rank them by how often you're asked and how much your answer differentiates you from generic AI consultants.
๐ก Pro Tip
The best content topics are questions your clients ask you on sales calls. Keep a running doc of every question you hear โ that's a content calendar built from real demand, not guesswork.
