Quantum Applications โ Near-Term & Long-Term
Near-Term Applications (NISQ Era, 2024-2030)
QUANTUM CHEMISTRY & DRUG DISCOVERY: Simulating molecular interactions at the quantum level. Even small molecules like caffeine are computationally expensive to simulate classically. Quantum computers can model drug-protein interactions exactly, potentially revolutionising pharmaceutical development. Companies: Quantinuum (with Roche), IBM (with Pfizer).
FINANCIAL OPTIMISATION: Portfolio optimisation, risk analysis, options pricing. JP Morgan, Goldman Sachs all running quantum experiments. Near-term advantage is unclear but the research investment is significant.
MATERIALS SCIENCE: Designing better batteries, solar cells, superconductors. Finding a room-temperature superconductor would be transformative for energy transmission. Quantum simulation could crack this.
Long-Term Applications (Fault-Tolerant Era, 2030+)
LOGISTICS & SUPPLY CHAIN: The travelling salesman problem and its variants affect every global supply chain. True quantum speedup here could save hundreds of billions annually.
AI TRAINING: Quantum machine learning algorithms could accelerate certain types of model training. Still highly theoretical โ current quantum ML research results are mixed.
CRYPTOGRAPHY: Breaking current encryption at scale. This is the most certain application โ mathematically proven, just waiting for hardware scale.
CLIMATE MODELLING: More accurate atmospheric simulation. Quantum computers could model fluid dynamics and chemical reactions in ways impossible classically, improving climate and weather prediction accuracy by orders of magnitude.

Be sceptical of near-term quantum advantage claims in optimisation and ML โ most are still unproven at scale. The clearest near-term wins are quantum chemistry simulation. The clearest long-term wins are cryptography.
